Submission for the Cities and Memory Global Sound Map Project "Three Words":

This project invited artists to use three word location identifiers as artistic inspiration, using them as a set of “found instructions” to remix and reimagine a field recording from any given location – like location-based Oblique Strategies cards.

What3words is a unique mapping and location system whereby every 3m square in the world is assigned a unique three-word address – which means any location on the planet can be found using a three-letter identifier.

The approach taken to construct this piece utilised the 'what3words' theme of location. Accompanying the original field recording - 'Underwater at Little Tribune Bay with boat noise' by Matt Rogalsky in Canada - are a range of captured sounds from the location of our own home. The sounds were combined with an improvised guitar piece with spoken word by local artist Gary Abkin.

The ticking of the oven clock and spoken words is a statement about the human process of creating artificial constructs and controls over time and location. This sits in stark contrast to the patterns and interconnectedness of nature and its persistence through devastating human impacts.
